Fifteen area students were awarded college scholarships by the Kiwanis Club of Cape Girardeau recently. Awards were presented during a banquet for students, parents and counselors.
Students from Notre Dame, Cape Central and Kelly high schools were given the $1,000 awards. Recipients include Rodney Eftink of Gordonville, Teresa Ressel of Cape Girardeau, Julie Wehner of Delta, and William Hennecke, Jr., all of Notre Dame High School; Sarah Altenthal, Jennifer Altenthal, Carlen Keller, Kendra Kelley, Kimberly Behring, Shawn Craig and Mike Potillo, all of Cape Girardeau Central High School; David Robert of Benton, Kelly High School; and Michelle Wilson of Jackson High School.
Two special scholarships were awarded to Valerie Holt and Mayme Young. Holt, who attends South Pemiscot High School, received a $1,000 scholarship for her exhibit at the Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair. Young was awarded a music scholarship.
About 40 students applied for the scholarships, but only 15 were chosen. Applications were based on financial need. The scholarships were given in honor of Narvol Randol, Martin Loos and Cecil Blaylock and in memory of Garland Fronebarger, Wayne Rust and True Taylor.
