Kirkwood mayor to be released from hospital

CREVE COEUR, Mo. (AP) -- A suburban St. Louis mayor who was shot twice in the head by a disgruntled resident at a city council meeting will be discharged from the hospital.

Kirkwood Mayor Michael Swoboda will be released to a rehabilitation hospital on Wednesday for further treatment. His friends and family say doctors are amazed at his recovery so far.

The mayor has been at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in suburban St. Louis since February 7th.

The gunman, Charles Lee "Cookie" Thornton, shot and killed two police officers, two City Council members and the public works director. He also shot and wounded a reporter.

Thornton was shot and killed by police.
