Eight regional finalists will win a chance to advance to international judging in the Kodak International Newspaper Snapshot Awards. But all photographs entered will be displayed at the West Park Mall in Cape Girardeau.

Today marks the start of KINSA, which sponsored locally by the Southeast Missourian Newspaper.

"We're very excited that all photo entries will be displayed at West Park Mall from Aug. 26 through Sept. 2. This really offers regional exposure for all those who enter," said Joyce Hunter, KINSA coordinator at the Southeast Missourian.

"The mall is a regional center that attracts thousands of people each day," said Hunter. "It's a great opportunity for people to show off their photographs."

Most of the photographs will also be published in a keepsake edition to be published Aug. 24 in the Southeast Missourian.

Five Gold sponsors have signed up for the contest. They include Wal-Mart Supercenter, Southeast Missouri Hospital, Western Sizzlin' and Shoe Carnival in Cape Girardeau and Delmonico's in Jackson.

Official contest entry centers include: Wal-Mart Supercenter, Delmonico's, Western Sizzlin' and Shoe Carnival, along with all offices of the Southeast Missourian in Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Chaffee and Marble Hill.

Hunter has received a number of inquiries since announcement of the contest last week. Below she answers some of the common questions:

--Q: What size print is needed?

A: Any standard size print will work. All prints must use Kodak film and processing. Both color and black-and-white prints are eligible.

--Q: Must the entry forms be originals?

A: No. Entry forms can be found in the newspaper or at official entry locations. Photocopies are also acceptable. Entry forms must be fully completed and securely attached to the print.

--Q: Are the number of entries limited?

A: No. Persons can enter as many times as they wish. But Hunter encourages people to spread out their entries throughout the six weeks, to enhance their chances of becoming a semi-finalist.

--Q: How much does it cost?

A: There is no entry fee. However, prints won't be returned at contest's end.

--Q: When does the contest run?

A: Each contest begins on a Sunday and runs through 5 p.m. Friday. Saturday entries may fall in either week, depending on the pickup time of entries.

--Q: What photos are eligible?

A: Any photograph taken since Jan. 1, 1995 can be entered. If chosen a semi-finalist, the entrant must obtain a release from all those identifiable in the photo.

--Q: Who is eligible?

A: The contest is open to residents of the Missouri counties of Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Scott, New Madrid, Perry, Stoddard and New Madrid, and the Illinois counties of Alexander, Pulaski and Union. Employees and their families of Kodak and the Southeast Missourian and all their subsidiaries are ineligible.

--Q: What can I win?

A: Finalists will win Kodak gift certificates (valued up to $50), a professional framed and matted enlargement of their print, prizes from local merchants and a chance to win up to $10,000 in the international judging. Twenty-four semi-finalists will win prizes, and all who enter are eligible for random drawings of Southeast Missourian subscriptions, comic-strip umbrellas and merchant prizes.
