The Visiting Nurse Association is taking baked goods and fresh fruits to patients this week.

A helping had to moms and kids

Birthright volunteers are giving cookies and milk to everyone who enters the doors. In addition, they will be giving new children's books to each child who comes in during the month. New infant pajamas and new blankets will be donated to the Safe House to be given to clients who have babies.

Mr. and Mrs. Hess Porter of Benton want to thank Gladys and Calvin Nebel, also of Benton, for their year-round acts of kindness. The Nebels take newspapers from the curb and place them on doorsteps for many people in Benton.

Helping others in Chaffee

Steve Heintz earned praise for going out of his way to help others. He does the Housing Authority newsletter in Chaffee without pay. He is often seen carrying groceries, plants or flowers for the elderly, reported Ada Jackson.

Sweet treat from Alpha Mu Gamma

Janie McGaugh of Cape Girardeau thanked Southeast Missouri State University's foreign language sorority -- Alpha Mu Gamma -- for bringing her a "very large candy bar" Tuesday.

Kindness during "Ice Age"

On Jan. 12, during the "Ice Age," a farewell dinner was planned for Father Glenn Eftink, an associate pastor of St. Mary's/Old St. Vincent's, who was being transferred. Viola Dohogne of Cape Girardeau thanked Paul and Frances Reynolds, who insisted on picking up Viola and her sister and brother-in-law, Ada and George Rousell. The Reynolds transported the three to the dinner and back. "Never have I walked on such treacherous ice!," said Dohogne. "No one fell, and no food was spilled. We all live in different parts of town, necessitating several stops. I wonder how many people would do this!"
