Republican Peter Kinder maintained a huge lead over Democrat Betty Hearnes in fund raising for the 27th District state Senate race, according to campaign finance reports filed last week.
The reports, due 40 days before the Nov. 3 general election, showed that Kinder had $13,385 in his campaign account while Hearnes had $4,634.
Kinder reported raising $85,271 and spending $65,853, compared with Hearnes, who reported total receipts of $47,669 and expenditures of $43,334.
The latest report reflects the first report due for the general election campaign; the other reports are due seven days before the election and 30 days after.
During this reporting period, from Aug. 30 to Sept. 19, Hearnes raised $6,970 and spent $6,095. Kinder's report covered from Aug. 20 to Sept. 19, and showed receipts of $16,631 and expenditures of $20,651.
Hearnes' largest contributions for the period were $500, coming from several sources, including the committee of state Rep. Gracia Backer of New Bloomfield. Also contributing $500 were the Dealers Interested in Government PAC; John E. Bardgett of Jefferson City; James H. Bogle of Cape Girardeau; and her husband, Warren Hearnes of Charleston.
Kinder's largest contributors were $1,000 from two sources: Southern Development Co. and Kansas City Southern Industries, both located at the same address in Kansas City.
He also received $500 contributions from the Missouri Dental PAC; Gary Kamp of Marble Hill; River Eagle Distributors of Cape Girardeau; Girardeau Stevedore and Contractors Inc. of Cape Girardeau; and Susan Dodd of Cape Girardeau.
Expenditures by Hearnes included about $800 for newspaper advertising, $200 for radio ads, about $2,400 for signs and sign construction, $500 for postage, $750 for advertising materials such as balloons, cards and shirts, $375 for voter registration lists, $300 for office rent, and $277 for computer expenses.
Kinder's largest expenditures for the period were $4,500 to the American Viewpoint polling firm and $4,081 to Trettor Gorman Inc. of St. Louis as a consulting fee.
Some of Kinder's other expenditures during the period were about $2,400 for printing, $2,400 for advertising, $2,000 for signs, $1,900 for computer costs, $330 for office supplies, $276 for rent, and $1,800 in payroll.
Other contributors to the Hearnes campaign from political committees were: Citizens for (Sen. Steve) Danner of Kirksville, $250; the Missouri CPA PAC, $250; Credit Union PAC of Missouri, $200; Electrical Workers of St. Louis, $250; Life Underwriters PAC, $250; the Missouri School Alliance PAC, $400; the Missouri Council of School Administrators, $100; and the Missouri State U.A.W. PAC, $300.
Also contributing to the Hearnes campaign during this period were: Keith Day of Sikeston, an in-kind contribution of $200; Edward L. Downs of Cape Girardeau, $250; and the Lowes and Drusch law firm of Cape Girardeau, $250.
Hearnes received $1,670 in contributions in amounts under $100.
Other contributors to Kinder included a $300 in-kind contribution from Drury Southwest, Inc.; $250 from Fleming Co./Malone & Hyde Inc.; $250 each from Kenneth Asher, Vernon Kasten, John Lichtenegger and Stone Manes, all of Jackson; $200 each from C.R. Talbert, John Thomas Hall, and Harold Ridings, all of Cape Girardeau; and $150 from Ford Groves Motor Co. and Jim Limbaugh of Cape Girardeau.
Contributing $125 to Kinder from Cape Girardeau were: William LaFoe, Donald Thomasson, Helen Creglow, W.R. Smirl, Raymond Ritter, John Sheets, Keith Deimund, Terry James, J.F. Gambill, Jerry Pind, Paul Miles, Christopher Bennett, Mrs. Lehman Finch, Johnson Communications, Irvin Garms, Ernest Beussink, Rebecca Ogborn, Robert Ward, James Erlacker, and Kenneth Bender.
Other Cape Girardeau residents contributing $125 were: Jerry Stone, Jonathan Foley, Richard Steele, William Roberts, Donald Staples, Audry Eldridge, Tom Sparkman, Joe Regenhardt, Brian Tracy, J.P. Tlapek, David Limbaugh, Gary Rust, David Jordon, Joda Bess, and Wynn Rust.
Also contriubting $125 were Gilster & Mary Lee Corp. of Chester, Ill., and Mel Tull and Kim Moore of Perryville.
Kinder also received $3,546 from contributors giving less than $100.
Kinder and Hearnes are running for the seat being vacated by John Dennis, who is retiring after 16 years in office.
The 27th District includes the counties of Cape Girardeau, Scott, Mississippi, Bollinger, Madison, and Perry.
