While television stations throughout the country broadcast the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon, KFVS12 aired a new program -- "Stars Across the Heartland."
It was the first time in more than 30 years the news station didn't air the telethon that has raised more than $2 billion for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Anchors Mary Ann Maloney and Jeff Cunningham hosted the hourlong special Monday morning from Southeast Missouri Hospital HealthPoint Plaza. They said the new campaign was held in order to continue a partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association but also to reach more viewers.
A number of people and groups had already donated to the cause before the broadcast, including the Southeast Missouri Central Labor Council.
"We support a lot of causes like this one in the area, but this is a really important one," said JJ Lane, council vice president and guest on the show. "We're behind it 100 percent."
Also donating to MDA were more than 30 fire departments in the KFVS12 coverage area.
Scott City fire chief Jay Cassout said his crew has done a lot to raise money for MDA, including setting up a booth at the city's Summerfest. They raised $1,800 for the association. Mike Allen, a Cape Girardeau firefighter, said his crew raised $3,000 in four days recently while stationed in front of Walmart and West Park Mall for its annual "Fill the Boot" campaign.
"It's great to get out and help the community. It's good to know it stays local," Allen said. "We look forward to it every year."
The special also had stories about the Detering family of Anna, Ill., whose youngest son was born with a rare neuromuscular disease.
Amber and Brett Detering said doctors don't know a lot about the disorder their son, Austin, has, which has left him blind in his right eye. He goes through visual, speech and physical therapy each day, though, and has gained mobility is his hands and is learning sign language. They remain hopeful MDA will find a cure for the disease.
"There are peaks and valleys, but so far the peaks are a lot higher than anything else," Brett Detering said. "MDA gives us hope."
