Kennett man dies in car accident

DUNKLIN COUNTY, Mo. - An accident on Route NN proved fatal for one Kennett, Mo., man.

At about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities responded to a head-on collision at the accident scene, three miles south of Kennett, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol

crash reports Web site. Derek K. Smith, 18, of Kennett was traveling northbound in his 1998 Oldsmobile when he crossed the centerline of the roadway and struck a 1989 Freightliner driven by David E. Sallas, 36, of Cave City, Ark.

Smith was pronounced dead by coroner Jack Adkins and transported to a morgue at Twin Rivers Medical Center in Kennett. Sallas suffered moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to the medical center. Both vehicles were totaled.
