KELSO -- A proposition to more than double the Kelso School District tax rate is expected to attract a larger than usual vote here Tuesday.

Other than the proposal to increase the tax rate from $1.25 to $2.75, voters in the school district will select two board members for the district's board of education.

Candidates are incumbent Norman Heuring, who is seeking his fifth term on the board; incumbent Robert Mothershead, who is finishing his first term, and challengers Linda Yarbro and Joie Henley.

A contest in Scott County School District in Oran also has four candidates seeking two board seats. Tom Urhahn is the only incumbent. Others seeking three-year terms are Brenda Cook, Rosalia Friga and Robert S. Owen.

Incumbents Larry Meyr and Dale Tierney have no opposition in the Chaffee School District.

Voters in the Kelso School District are being asked to raise their taxes because of Senate Bill 380, Missouri's sweeping education funding and reform law, which requires that all district impose a minimum levy of $2.75 by the 1994-95 school year, or face closure.
