KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City police officer fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at him during a foot chase Saturday, police said.
The officer, whom police would not identify, was responding to a report of a man in dark clothes holding his ear to an apartment door in the city's Hospital Hill neighborhood, said police spokesman Steve Young.
The officer saw a man who fit the description in a nearby alley and chased him, Young said. The officer reported on his hand-held radio that the man was armed and had pointed his gun. Then, the officer said he shot the man, whom police would not identify pending notification of family.
The man, who was later pronounced dead at a Kansas City hospital, did not fire any shots, Young said. He said he did not know how many shots the officer fired.
The officer is on administrative leave, and the department's internal affairs division combed the area after the incident, which is routine with all officer-related shootings.
