Juveniles reported carrying guns near Alma Schrader school

One youth was arrested and another was being sought Friday for carrying suspected stolen weapons near a Cape Girardeau school.

Police received a call around 12:50 p.m. of two individuals seen carrying guns behind Alma Schrader Elementary School, according to police spokesman Jason Selzer.

When police arrived, by which point the pair had walked past the school, the two fled. Police were able to arrest one, a 14-year-old boy, and were seeking a 16-year-old boy as of 4:30 p.m., Selzer said.

Also recovered were five guns, most of which were rifles, according to Selzer.

The youths were likely moving the weapons, which police believe were stolen, from one location to another, according to Selzer.

When police received the call of the youths with weapons, they notified Alma Schrader Elementary, Selzer said.

As a precaution, the children in the school were confined to their classrooms, Cape Girardeau School District superintendent Dr. David Scala said.

The lockdown ended around 1:45 p.m. when police told school officials that the youths were no longer in the area, he said.

No threat was made to the school, and officials do not believe the youths intended such a threat.
