SCOTT CITY -- Jennifer Bertrand and Emily Wipfler, juniors at Scott City High School, have been awarded the national "I Dare You Leadership Award."
The award is presented to the two juniors at the school who exhibit personal integrity, balanced living and a potential for leadership.
The award was first offered in 1941 by William H. Danforth, one of the founders of the American Youth Foundation.
Those receiving the award also receive a copy of Danforth's book "I Dare You." In addition, students have the opportunity to attend an 11-day national leadership conference next summer.
Bertrand's activities include serving as treasurer of Student Council, secretary of Future Business Leaders of America, vice president of Pep Club and Treasurer of the Science Club.
She is a member of the National Honor Society, Math Club, Foreign Language Club, SADD, a Boy Scout career exploring post, the speech team and is a cheerleader.
Bertrand attended the Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership Seminar, participated in the Model United Nations at Southeast Missouri State University and is a district winner in the VFW "Voice of Democracy" competition.
Wipfler is a member of National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, Pep Club, Foreign Language Club, SADD, and a Boy Scout career exploring post.
She is a member of the speech team and has been a finalist in district competition.
She participated in the Model United Nations at Southeast Missouri State University this year. For the past two years, she has been a student aide in the counseling center.
Bertrand is the daughter of Larry and Connie Bertrand of Scott City. Wipfler is the daughter of Charles and Susie Wipfler of Scott City.
