Dressed in a prison orange jumpsuit, Gregory Allen McNeely of Cape Girardeau said little during his initial court appearance Monday as a judge told him he could face the death penalty.

McNeely, 24, is accused of fatally shooting Terry Vernon Lynn, 26, of Cape Girardeau shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday behind Players Lounge, located at 632 Broadway.

McNeely appeared on camera on a computer monitor from the Cape Girardeau County Jail in Jackson, where he is being held on $1 million bond.

Associate Circuit Judge Gary Kamp asked McNeely if he understood the charges against him. McNeely said, "no."

Kamp, from the courtroom in the courthouse in Jackson, then read the charges against him. The judge told McNeely he could face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted of killing Lynn. On the armed criminal action charge he could be incarcerated for three years or for life, Kamp said. McNeely said he is in the process of obtaining an attorney. Kamp continued the case to Nov. 10 at 3 p.m.

Visitation for Lynn takes place at the Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Scott City from 4 to 8 p.m. today. The funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday.
