Jackson R-2 students will be stuck in the classroom a week longer this spring. The harsh winter to date led the school board to extend the school year by five days at its Jan. 9 meeting.
The only other option was to use holidays to make up the four days missed so far, due to bad weather. The board and the Community Teachers Association did not want to take that route.
The decision will move graduation back from 7 p.m. May 18 to Sunday, May 27. Originally, a Friday or Saturday night graduation was considered on Memorial Day weekend. The downside was that the state track and field meet will be that weekend in Jefferson City. Doing it on Sunday also meant that the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau was available to reserve at a discounted rate, in case of bad weather.
District Superintendent Dr. Ron Anderson, said the May 27 graduation date is "hard and fast," even if more bad weather occurs.
