The Cape Girardeau Jaycees announced Tuesday they are launching another fund drive for bullet-proof vests for area law enforcement officers.

Money raised by the drive will be given to the regional chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, which will purchase and distribute the vests to law enforcement officers in Cape Girardeau County. The money is being sought from county residents, service organizations and businesses.

This is the third time the Jaycees have held a bullet-proof vest fund drive since 1981, said Teresa Kuss, chairperson of the Jaycees' bulletproof vest fund drive committee.

"We are again pleased to show our support to the law enforcement officers within our community by initiating this fund drive," she said.

Said Cape Girardeau patrolman and regional police chapter president Eddy James: "The bullet-proof vest fund falls right in line with the goals of our organization, and we would like to see all the officers within our community able to take advantage of the enormous benefits offered by the vests."

To kick off the campaign, James said, the Jaycees donated $500. A goal of $12,000 is set, he said.

It is hoped, he said, that 30 vests can be bought. A vest costs about $450, he said.

The regional police chapter was established in April 1991. It encompasses six counties from Ste. Genevieve to Scott, said James.

The chapter has several goals. They are to: improve the law enforcement profession through better working conditions; contribute to local charitable organizations; serve the public; and monitor legislation affecting law enforcement at the local, state and national levels.

Those wanting to donate to the fund may call the Jaycees at 334-0416 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Friday.
