Kelly Wills, national Jaycees president, and Lewis Ash, Missouri Jaycee president, will visit Cape Girardeau Tuesday during a 42-state "Wake Up America" campaign.
The campaign goal is to register one million new voters and educate them about the issues before they head to the polls.
"There never has been a greater need for volunteers to step forward and make an impact in communities across our nation," Wills said in a released statement. "It's vital that young Americans take a greater responsibility for the actions of our government. The most effective way of doing that is by voting in all local, state and national elections."
Wills' visit to Cape Girardeau comes during area elections for city government and school boards.
But getting voters registered is only part of the campaign. Other agenda items include spreading the word about slowing tobacco sales to minors and gathering support for a bi-partisan commission on Social Security.
The Jaycees are working with retailers, law enforcement and citizens to stop the sale of tobacco to minors. The program is called Jaycees Against Youth Smoking.
Wills will meet with the Cape Girardeau Jaycees for a noon luncheon at the Holiday Inn Heritage Room. He then will head to Matthews, Sikeston and Kennett.
The "Wake Up America" campaign began Jan. 16 in Tulsa, Okla., and should continue its journey through national elections in November.
