JACKSON, Mo. -- At its meeting tonight, the Jackson Board of Aldermen will consider authorizing an engineering company to make improvements to the Farmington Road/West Independence intersection.
A jog in the intersection results in an obstructed view as motorists going north on Farmington approach West Independence, according to assistant city administrator Larry Koenig.
"The idea is to improve safety," he said.
The intersection currently has stop signs on both sides of Farmington Road. Koenig does not expect any change in the stop signs.
He said the city is working toward construction of the improvements next year. The engineering firm is Koehler Engineering & Land Surveying Inc. of Cape Girardeau.
The board also will consider amending the city ordinance governing the display or sale of goods along sidewalks. Merchants currently are not allowed to sell or display their wares on the city's sidewalks, although some have been doing so. The amended ordinance would allow sidewalk sales as long as a 60-inch unobstructed travel way is maintained. Koenig said this figure meets requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The proposed amendment also addressed the issue of permitting sidewalk sales or special event sales.
