The city of Jackson will seek a $30,000 state grant to upgrade its recycling facility.

Aldermen Monday night approved the grant application for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Waste Reduction and Recycling Project.

"We're hoping with information to the public and all that and with a new location and increasing the types of materials we take in, we have a goal of doubling our recyclables with this," said Paul Morris, the city's public works director.

If the grant application is approved, the recycling center, now on Crites Street, will move to 508 Eastview Court, which is now used for storing recyclable materials. The public will sort the materials themselves, and a part-time attendant will be on-site to help direct them through the center, he said.

The city now accepts plastics, cardboard, newsprint and glass. With the upgrade, junk mail, magazines and tin can be added to the mix, Morris said, and there will be space to better sort the plastics.

Increasing the city's capacity will increase the return on the recyclables, he said.

"I'm really happy to see us get involved with this," said Mayor Paul Sander. "Recycling certainly is the thing of the present and the thing of the future, and we're going to take the lead instead of following with this."

The city is seeking $30,125 in state funds and will provide $5,759 in matching funds and $13,317 in in-kind services for a total project cost of $49,201.
