A steering committee has been established to consider an arts council for the city, said Shane Anderson, director of parks and recreation.

An arts council would work with the Southeast Missouri Arts Council in Cape Girardeau.

The decision to form a steering committee was made at a recent informational meeting.

People from Jackson, music and art teachers and some Cape Girardeau people are part of the steering committee.

The committee will focus on planning events for the July 4 celebration, Homecomers and Christmas.

In time, the committee will work with art teachers to produce something beneficial to the school district.

The committee will also seek to acquire a meeting place of its own.
