JACKSON TO ASSIGN OFFICER TO SEMO DRUG TASK FORCE

JACKSON -- The City of Jackson has decided to join the SEMO Drug Task Force, if on a trial basis.

A Jackson police officer will be assigned to the drug crime-fighting organization for 120 days as a test. "It is taking one of our officers off the street," City administrator Steve Wilson said.

The Missouri Highway Patrol and the Cape Girardeau Sheriff's Department have approached the city in the past seeking the loan of an officer, Wilson told the Jackson Board of Aldermen Monday night. This year, the Highway Patrol asked the city to put an officer into the task force, which is composed of law enforcement personnel from agencies throughout the region.

The city has decided to assign the officer to the task force for 120 days "to see how this will work for us," Wilson said.

"We know we have a problem in the city. And we have been working with the SEMO Drug Task Force in the past, so this is not a new endeavor."

In other action Monday night, the board voted to consider a petition for voluntary annexation from Earl Norman and Bobby Barks for 70.11 acres intended for residential development off Kimbel Lane. A public hearing was set for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3.

The acreage would be added to 61.82 acres already zoned R-1 to become a proposed subdivision called Warren Place.
