Jackson streetscape project seeks donations for sprinklers

With one week remaining until construction begins on an uptown Jackson streetscape project, engineer Tom Strickland said during a meeting Monday with city merchants that just $1,240 needs to be donated for an automatic sprinkler project.

Not approved when the Missouri Department of Transportation awarded a grant for the streetscape project, the automatic sprinkler system is needed to water flower beds and pots on the section of High Street between Main and Adams streets. Scheduled for a construction date of Sept. 8, the improvements will include historic reproduction lighting, sidewalk pavers, benches and trash receptacles. The project should be complete by Dec. 31.

Thirteen Jackson merchants and businessmen have contributed $4,010 toward the installation and purchase of the sprinkler system, with half of the donations coming within the past 10 days. But in addition to the goal of $5,250 for the sprinkler system, an additional $4,000 must be raised toward the purchase of 10 banners on light poles, planting of flowers and establishment of a historic foundation.

Strickland hopes the city will purchase the first set of 10 banners. Additional sets of banners would cost about $1,000 each.

"I feel confident that funding will be given by our community for banners and flowers and all will be in place for us to enjoy," Stirckland said.
