Change may be in the works for uptown Jackson, thanks to a historic preservation ordinance that will be discussed by the Jackson Board of Aldermen during study session Monday night.

The board will examine the findings of a preliminary review of the proposed ordinance that would create a local uptown historic district, said building and planning superintendent Janet Sanders.

Depending on how the review goes, the aldermen's next step would be to set a public hearing for some time in August and notify all property owners within the potential local uptown historic district.

"That could turn into an interesting story," Sanders said. "Since I would expect to hear public opinion on both sides."

The board is expected to vote on several other issues during tonight's meeting, including a motion to hire a contractor to conduct a wage, salary and benefits survey for the city, as well awarding contracts for several water and sewer projects.

The board also will vote on whether or not the city should buy a piece of land from the Southeast Missouri University Foundation, as well as several amendments to the city's stop-sign street schedule and parking-prohibited schedule.
