JACKSON -- After months of delays and unanticipated costs, the Grandview Acres sewer project could be complete by Jan. 1, Public Works Director Jim Roach told the Board of Aldermen Monday.
The project is a sanitary sewer retrofit in a subdivision that has been operating on septic systems. The approximately 50 landowners requested annexation into the city because of problems with their systems.
The city set a fixed price of about $5,000 per homeowner to help pay for the lift station and trunk line. That price may vary according to the size of the property.
The city will absorb about $100,000 in unanticipated costs, most of it due to extra rock excavation that had not been foreseen in the engineer's estimate.
The board approved a change order of nearly $62,000 Monday night to PR Developers Inc. to pay for additional rock drilling, seeding and placing straw. It will be up to the individual homeowners to arrange for tying into the sewer system. That cost is estimated at $2,000 to $2,500 apiece.
Roach said a 30-day period to allow for settling of the system and testing will follow before homeowners can begin tying in.
Homeowners can pay for the sewer either in a lump sum or over 10 years through an addition to their yearly tax bill plus interest.
