With the addition of air conditioning to several buildings and other improvements made throughout the district, the ease with which students returned to class in the Jackson R-2 School District is in marked contrast to the traditional hot, hectic and headachy first day of school.

Jackson Superintendent Wayne Maupin said Friday afternoon that the first three days of class in his district had gone exceptionally well. Students returned to class Wednesday in the district.

"The first day went exceptionally well. I don't know how the first day of school could have gone any better," said Superintendant Wayne Maupin, who explained that the only problems the district encountered were a few late busses and these, he said, were anticipated as drivers became more accustomed to their routes.

Maupin said first day enrollment was up just over 100 students for the 1994-1995 school year. First day figures showed a total of 3,813 students enrolled on the first day, up 107 from last year's figure of 3,706.

Those students returned to find a number of welcome changes made throughout the district.

Probably the most noticeable was the addition of air conditioning to the third floor of the main high school building and at the junior high and Millersville buildings. Maupin said the addition of air conditioning made district buildings between 90 and 95 percent air conditioned.

Another positive improvement over last year was the addition of 12 faculty members in the district. Adding the new instructors helps the district meets its goal of having a 25 to 1 ratio of students to teachers.
