The Jackson school board approved a wellness policy Tuesday night that emphasizes nutrition and exercise to improve students' health.

In other action, the board adopted a $38.7 million budget for the 2006-2007 school year that includes 5 percent raises and the creation of 11 new teaching positions.

The new positions reflect efforts to reduce class sizes as well as expansion of school programs, superintendent Dr. Ron Anderson said after the meeting.

Salaries and benefits make up 73 percent of the district's budget.

The wellness policy states that all foods and beverages sold in vending machines at the Jackson schools will meet state "Eat Smart" guidelines.

At least 50 percent of items offered must include water, milk and fruit juices, school district officials said.

School districts must adopt a wellness policy to meet federal law.

Joyce McIntosh, the district's wellness coordinator and a school nurse, said the district will focus its efforts largely on educating parents about proper nutrition and exercise.

Seeking parental help

One possibility is to present information on nutrition at parent-teacher organization meetings, she told the board.

McIntosh said the district plans to coordinate with Main Street Fitness in Jackson to encourage students to take advantage of exercise programs after school.

Assistant superintendent Dr. Rita Fisher said the wellness policy is designed to improve students' health.

"We hope it will make a difference in our students' lives," she said.
