Jackson School Board OKs new fitness class beginning next year

Jackson School District students will have a more rigorous option next year for physical education at the senior and junior high school level.

The Jackson School Board approved the addition of an advanced personal fitness and wellness class during its meeting Tuesday.

Junior High School principal Cory Crosnoe said the class will provide training for students who are more advanced with agility and weightlifting.

"You're going to get a lot out of those students," he said.

The class counts as half of the one credit of physical education that is required for graduation. Crosnoe said the class will help athletes get ahead on their workouts.

"If they have this class, they can at least get their strength training during that time," he said.

Crosnoe said the teachers will work with coaches during the sports seasons to make sure the students are training properly.

Other business

The board also heard from seven librarians throughout the district on the reading programs.

At the high school, Danna Bruns said book circulation has increased during the past school year. Students have checked out 9,000 books this year, which compares to 5,000 as of last April, she said. Bruns attributed the increase to silent reading programs.

The board also approved a program evaluation for library and media resources, which is completed every two years.

Separately, the board approved a proposal to switch banking services to Commerce Bank in July. The district previously contracted services with US Bank and its predecessors for ten years. The district will enter a one-year contract, which is renewable annually for four years, said Wade Bartels, the district's chief financial officer.
