JACKSON -- With the rezoning of 60 acres of property along North High Street, Jackson took another step toward establishing its own industrial tract in the northern part of town.
Monday night, the Board of Aldermen rezoned 50 acres of city-owned land at 2501 N. High St. from single family residential to heavy industrial and 10 acres of city-owned land at 2504 N. High St. from single family residential to general commercial.
The city bought the land about six months ago and followed up with annexation. Mayor Paul Sander appointed a committee composed of members of the Jackson Industrial Development Corporation, the city, the Jackson Chamber of Commerce and Cape Girardeau Area Industrial Recruitment Executive Director Mitch Robinson to supervise its development.
City Administrator Steve Wilson, speaking on behalf of the committee Monday night, recommended hiring Missouri Engineering of Rolla to design a plan to develop the project.
Sander said no timetable has been set for completing the industrial tract, but he thinks it has a good future.
"Because of its proximity to the interstate, it will be very good for development," he said. "The whole idea is to have clean industry, whether it's new businesses or expanded businesses, to provide more jobs."
The 50-acre parcel is west of North High Street, and the 10 acres are east of the road. The land is about half a mile north of Harmony Street. The east side of the road is not deemed conducive for industrial uses but could be developed for commercial purposes or as parkland, Sander said.
In other business, the board:
-- Was told that the new Old Cape Road Bridge is now open for local traffic. Asphalt for the bridge will be poured in the spring.
-- Authorized advertisement for bids for a sewer cleaning truck. The truck will be able to wash out and vacuum sewers without sending workers into manholes.
