Construction on the East Lane recreation trail in Jackson will begin Tuesday, connecting three existing trails on the west side of the city.
Rodney Bollinger, Jackson public works director, said, "This particular trail segment is important because it connects two school campuses, junior high and Orchard Elementary, and is directly adjacent to the soccer fields and track located along East Lane. Children walking to and from area schools will benefit from the convenience and safety of the new trail."
The new concrete trail segment will begin at the intersection of West Jackson Boulevard and extend north three blocks to Orchard Drive. It will connect to the West Jackson Boulevard trail, the Oak Street trail and the Orchard Road trail.
Bollinger said Lappe Cement of Perryville, Mo., was awarded the contract, worth more than $62,000, in July. The Transportation Enhancement Program sponsored by the Missouri Department of Transportation will cover 80 percent of the project's cost, he said, leaving the city with a little more than $12,450 to finance for the remaining 20 percent.
Bollinger said the project should be complete by Nov. 6.
