Rodney Bollinger, Jackson Planning and Zoning superintendent, recommended that the Planning and Zoning Board completely withdraw a recent proposal to rezoning 181 properties.
The board's January meeting draw a large crowd -- many of whom spoke out against a proposed change from C-3 (general business) to C-2 (general commercial).
Bollinger noted that concern about sprawl is one negative about the proposal. "New Urbanism," trend of pedestrian-friendly pre-World War II style neighborhoods, he said, is the coming trend.
"In looking at our central business district, it was extending to a certain extend into places that had quite a few residences," said Board President Barbara Lohr. "There is a mixture of commercial and residential, and again, that's legal because you can build a residence in a commercial district with no problem.
The board will vote on this and other issues during its Feb. 14 meeting.
