JACKSON READING PROGRAM ENDS

The 1994 summer reading program "Celebrate! Read!" held at the Jackson Public Library ended in August with a record-breaking enrollment of 363 children in preschool through the sixth grade.

The children read a total of 9,082 books over a ten-week period.

"Celebrate! Read!" encouraged children to develop good reading habits by visiting the library and discovering the fun and facts hidden in good books.

Every child, preschool through sixth grade, who completed the reading program, received a colorful pencil, a "Celebrate! Read!" sticker, a certificate signed by Gov. Mel Carnahan, a coupon for a free burger at Burger King, and a free paperback book of the child's choice from an approved selection of titles.

These children were also eligible to participate in our drawing for free prizes held on Aug. 10

There were five categories of winners. Winners were: Brandon Kremer in the boys grade K-2 division, who received a toy truck; Chelsey Rigdon in the girls grade K-2 division, who won a collection of treasure rock jewels.; Benjamin Statler, in the boys grade 3-6 division, who won a red toy car; Katie Fink in the girls grade 3-6 division, who won a wrist watch and colorful hair bows; and Erika Cook, in the preschool division, who won a Mr. Potato Head.

The program also awarded bicycles in a grand prize drawing. The bicycles were provided by the Noon and Evening Optimist Clubs of Jackson. The grand prize winners were Danielle Ruble, Amber Locklear and Ashlea Soemo.

In addition to regular meetings, children participating in the program took part in a variety of activities including viewing animals from Capetown Safari, an archery demonstration, a childrens theater, a magic show, a police canine demonstration, a model train demonstration and a visit from Smokey Bear.
