The Jackson Police Department will participate in the annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" national crackdown on drinking and driving, according to a news release from the department.

The crackdown will include high-visibility enforcement and high-profile events. It will be supported by national advertising to create a comprehensive campaign, the news release said. It will be in effect in Jackson from Aug. 16 to Sept. 2 in an effort to curb drunken driving through Labor Day weekend.

"Every year, about one-third of all motor vehicle deaths involve one or more impaired drivers or motorcycle operators," Lt. Scott Eakers of the Jackson Police Department said in the news release. "In 2012, 230 people died in Missouri crashes involving impaired drivers. That works out to approximately one impaired driving fatality every one-and-a-half days."

According to the news release, officers of the Jackson Police Department "will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers and will have a no tolerance approach to alcohol related offenses."
