Although it wasn't sweet victory for the home team, the Jackson High School Scholar Bowl team put on a strong tournament Jan. 27, with several of the region's top academic teams taking part.

In the end, Cape Central nudged cross-town rival Notre Dame in the varsity finals. Cape Central topped host Jackson in the junior varsity final round.

Matches ran throughout the day, with teams from Perryville, St. Vincent's, Fredericktown, and others present.

Questions ranged from history to grammar to industrial arts, world literature, economy, geography, algebra, trigonometry and current events.

Each team faced each other in round-robin play, with the top teams making the finals in the evening.

Among the judges were members of the Southeast Missouri State University faculty.
