After several months of back-and-forth, the Jackson Board of Aldermen approved the final plat of a proposed subdivision for residents 55 years old and older during its Monday night meeting.
Ramsey Branch LLC now has the necessary permits to begin developing a 32-acre parcel just south of Klaus Park in Jackson, near Interstate 55.
"It's an active adult community," Ramsey Branch partner Bobby Gray said, adding the subdivision would include several amenities for residents.
"It's really a subdivision with an age restriction," he said.
The company, he said, plans to begin building single-family homes on 138 lots and to begin staking out the land as soon as this morning.
Also during the meeting, Tom Mogelnicki, executive director of the Cape Girardeau County Transit Authority, presented the board with usage figures from 2015, the most recent year with available data.
He said the service provided 200,000 rides last year.
"That's 1.5 million miles last year, 41 vehicles," he said. "9,500 gallons of fuel a month. It's really grown."
He said this year, June and July were slower than usual, but "for the past six weeks, we can't hardly keep up. We have 16 vehicles from 5 in the morning to 5 in the evening running just as hard as they can go. ... We take people either to make money or spend money."
He thanked the city for its support and urged aldermen to keep CTA in mind during upcoming budget talks.
A public hearing was set for 7 p.m. Dec. 19 to consider the city's annual budget, which includes proposed sewer rate increases and other utility-rate increases.
