Jackson is planning to take some steps to prevent abuse of the city's brush and leaf dumping pits.
Public works director Rodney Bollinger said the pits across from the city's recycling center are intended for the use of city residents only, but last fall officials noticed nonresidents and businesses were dumping yard waste there.
"The problem exists in that contracted tree trimmers and landscapers, along with nonresidents, are utilizing this city service," he said.
Currently there is no penalty if someone is caught illegally dumping at the city's pits.
Bollinger said sometime this month staff members will propose additional language in the city's refuse ordinance that will make such use a violation of the city code. He said the city will also post signs around the pits warning that the pits are for city residential use only.
He hopes these steps will be enough to deter future dumping.
"While this is not a serious problem at the present time, we are trying to be proactive so it does not become an issue in the future," he said.
Bollinger said he did not know of an alternative dump spot for businesses and nonresidents who are currently dumping their yard waste in Jackson illegally.
