Jackson Noon Optimists prepare Kids Day in the Park

Jackson Noon Optimists have been upholding their creed, "Friends of Youth," as evidenced by recent events.

Optimist Way, at the entrance to Safety City at Jackson City Park, was spruced up on Park Day April 26. Flowerbeds were mulched, flowers were planted and a dedication was made to Carolyn Poe. Poe, a Jackson Noon Optimist who worked tirelessly at Safety City events and Kids Day in the Park, died earlier this year. New playground equipment was presented in her honor.

After a successful day at Safety City promoting bike safety for 53 youngsters on May 3, Respect For Law Week was held May 5 to 11. This is a time set aside by Optimist International to place special emphasis on the legal system, laws, those who uphold the laws and the agencies who enforce them. A poster contest was sponsored by the Jackson Noon Optimists. Open to all Jackson third-grade students, winners were selected by the Jackson police department. Jackson Noon Optimists presented certificates to all the winners; each class' first-place winner received an award and lunch with a police officer at their school. Grand-prize-winner Blake Julian of Orchard Elementary received a $50 savings bond.

Kids Day in the Park, slated for 11 a.m. June 7, will take place at Jackson City Park shelter No. 3. Admission is free and registration is not required. Information on safety is promoted through fun, games and interaction with Noon Optimists and other positive adult role models.

The County Firefighters Smokehouse will be featured, along with the Jackson police department display. Andy the miniature ambulance from Cape County Private Ambulance Service will be available to entertain and educate kids on safety issues.

There will be many activities, and groups promoting safety will distribute valuable safety information to youngsters and parents. A food stand will be available with hot dogs, chips and sodas free of charge to children 15 and under.
