JACKSON -- Mayor Paul Sander clashed with the Jackson Board of Aldermen Monday night, but their differences were over hues and not policy.
Because he lost the annual mayors' wager over the outcome of the Jackson-Cape Central football game, Sander wore an orange Central High School sweatshirt while presiding over Monday night's meeting of the Board of Aldermen. To show their support of Jackson High School, most of the board members and city staffers wore the Indians' red.
Central beat Jackson 22-6 Friday for the first Tiger victory in the three years since Sander and Cape Girardeau Mayor Al Spradling III began placing a friendly wager on the game. Spradling had to wear a red sweatshirt immediately after the previous two games.
An uncomfortable-looking Sander congratulated the Tigers on their victory and concluded, "It's more fun to be on the other end."
Cable Access Channel 5 was there to record the event.
Amid banter about how bad the mayor looks in orange and forecasts of future victories, the Board of Aldermen approved amendments to its nuisance ordinance that will limit the height of weeds and grass in the city to 7 inches.
Adoption of the amendments was tabled at the last board meeting after Alderman Dave Hitt objected to some of the provisions. Rejected from the amendments were proposals that would have required residents to shovel snow from their private sidewalks and ban trash burning.
In other business, the board set 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23 for a special meeting to accept petitions for voluntary annexation of properties into its Tax Increment Financing district.
