DUTCHTOWN - A 50-year-old Jackson man was in stable condition at a Cape Girardeau hospital Tuesday following the head-on collision of two cars on Highway 25 north of Dutchtown. The accident occurred at 7:52 a.m.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said Stephen C. Logan was traveling north when his car collided with a southbound car driven by Robert P. Graviett, 34, of Oran. Graviett was not injured. Authorities said both men were wearing seat belts.
Logan was taken to the St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau for treatment.
Sgt. Benny Hinton, the investigating officer, said Graviett fell asleep at the wheel of his car and drifted into the northbound lane of the oncoming Logan auto. Hinton said Logan saw the Graviett car coming toward him and swerved into the southbound lane to avoid the collision.
Hinton said, "At that moment, Graviett woke up and swerved back into the southbound lane just as his car struck the Logan auto on the right rear side.
The impact of the collision cut off the rear of the Logan car, which came to rest in a field about 80 feet west of the highway.
