Jackson man faces one charge in alleged April 15 attack; three dismissed

All but one charge against a Jackson man who had been accused of beating and raping a woman in her home April 15 was dismissed Wednesday morning following a preliminary hearing.

Daniel S. Reid, 31, now faces one count of domestic assault, an amended charge downgraded from the original first-degree assault charge filed against him in April.

Associate Circuit Judge Gary A. Kamp dismissed three other charges against Reid -- forcible rape, forcible sodomy and felonious restraint -- and bound the case over for circuit court May 26.

Public defender Jennifer Booth, attorney for Reid, filed a motion to have her client's $100,000 cash-only bond reduced, but Kamp denied the motion. Reid remains at the Cape Girardeau County Jail on the original bond.

A neighbor, Robert Duvall, testified at the preliminary hearing that on April 15 he saw a man standing over a woman and striking her several times.

"I was walking out the backdoor of my trailer and heard a woman screaming," Duvall said.

Duvall said he began running toward the couple and began calling 911 on a cell phone but that he didn't get a good look at either victim or assailant.

During cross-examination, Duvall said he'd been about 75 yards away from the attack.

The victim testified that she had been trying to get her daughter out of the residence, arguing with Reid for the past 24 hours, and that she'd asked him repeatedly not to put his hands on her in front of her child.

She had put her daughter in her vehicle and was trying to leave when Reid began hitting her in the side of the face, she said.

During cross-examination, the victim said Reid did not physically force her to have intercourse, that they had been fighting and that she still loved him.
