A well-known Jackson chiropractor died this week from injuries sustained in a late June accident near his office.

Rowland Fulenwider, 63, had been released Monday from Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau after spending weeks recovering from being hit by a pickup truck on South Hope Street, daughter Emily Fox said Thursday evening.

The death came as a shock to the family, Fox said. "We thought he was going to make it. Everything was fine except he was just so tired."

Fulenwider was walking home from his office shortly before 1 p.m. on June 28 when he was struck by a Ford F250 pickup driven by Matthew Abbott of Scott City. Fulenwider was crossing South Hope Street near Adams Street when Abbott turned left from Adams and ran into him, according to a report filed by the Jackson Police Department.

Abbott was not cited by police for the accident. Fox said her father's injuries were severe, caused by the truck rolling over him as it hit him.

The death has caused an outpouring of sympathy from friends and patients that is overwhelming, Fox said. The family's telephone hasn't stopped ringing and the house is full of people offering condolences, she said.

Fox said she can't count the number of people who have told her stories about her father treating them and refusing to accept pay for the services. "From what we are finding out, Dad touched so many more people than I could have ever imagined," Fox said.

Fulenwider's sister, Judy Hahs of Cape Girardeau, said what she remembers most about her brother was his sense of humor. "He was dry and could just crack you up all the time," Hahs said. "We are just going to miss him so much."

Visitation for Fulenwider will be held at McCombs Funeral Home in Jackson from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today and after 9 a.m. Saturday at New McKendree United Methodist Church. The funeral will be at the church at 10 a.m. Saturday with interment to follow in Russell Heights Cemetery.
