American Legion Post 158 members gathered recently for the organization's April meeting and also honored two members for outstanding service.
Jack Latimer and Vince Schwartz were awarded certificates in honor of their service and assistance to the advancement of the American Legion programs and ideals.
Jackson Senior Center administrator Debbie Stockton gave a presentation on programs at the center and the need for the planned new building.
Two new American Legion members, Dennis Gibson and John Hopkins, were introduced. Membership was reported at 589 by P.M. Kurre.
Americanism committee member Carlton Meyer reported five flags sold and three given away.
Jim Nelson reported contributions to the Post 158 American Legion Memorial Scholarship Fund by Connie Bell and Carolynn and Rob Thompson; L.W. Orrell and families in memory of Marie and Otis Orrell; Legion Auxiliary in memory of Ethel Hahs of Scott City; Jackson Post 158 in honor of Marsha Haskell; Jim Nelson in memory of boyhood friend Col. Bill Shanks; John Crites in memory of Robert Morrison.
A five member project steering group, plus the commander, continues to refine plans for a "World War II Veterans Recognition Day" celebration in Jackson on May 29. This is the day the National World War Memorial will be dedicated on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
A daylong World War II expo event is serving as the foundation for the project steering group. The biggest event of the day is a ceremony at the American Legion Post 158 presenting veterans with special recognition for their service to America. Recognition awards will be delivered to veterans unable to attend. Anyone wanting to register a veteran can call Jack Latimer at 243-3312, Bill Sullivan at 243-3032 or Charles Shultz at 243-4018.
The district meeting will be held today in Cape Girardeau.
A past commanders meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Delmonico's.
