"Children must participate in the reading portion to be eligible to attend the activities," Holmes said. "All children who complete the reading requirement will receive a 14-page activity booklet or a pocket folder; a colorful 2-inch Read Up A Storm sticker; a free paperback book of the child's choice from an approved selection of titles; a certificate signed by Gov. Mel Carnahan; and a bookmark from Burger King for a free burger, fry and drink."

Holmes said preschoolers will receive their own prizes and incentives for each five books read to them. The library will offer two bicycles as grand prizes.

"A library card is all that's needed to participate in the `Read Up A Storm' program," she said. "Any child, kindergarten or older, who lives within the Jackson School District, may receive a library card. Parents of children 17 or younger will be required to fill out an application card."

In addition to the reading program, Holmes said there will also be a number of special activities for those enrolled in the reading program. Some of these activities will include live, local woodland animals June 9; a model helicopter demonstration July 16; a live tarantula and spider demonstration June 23; weather and television program July 7; live lizards and snakes July 14; and an obedience dog demonstration July 21. All activities will take place on Wednesdays, from 1:30-2:30 p.m.
