The city of Jackson has issued a boil order effective immediately for properties located in the vicinity of Old Cape Road East due to a Wednesday morning water main break caused by utility work. Repairs are ongoing and city crews will remain on-site until work is complete.
In accordance with state regulations, the boil order applies to 4691, 4625, 4651 and 4788 Old Cape Road East and 3344 County Road 316. Notices are being hand-delivered to affected residents.
The boil order will expire at noon Saturday unless otherwise notified.
Erica Collins, staff engineer, said the following precautions should be taken:
* Boil water vigorously for three minutes before use. Use only boiled water for drinking, brushing teeth, diluting fruit juices and all food preparation and consumption.
* Dispose of ice cubes and do not use ice from household automatic ice makers. Remake ice cubes with boiled water.
* Disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersion for at least one minute in clean tap water that contains one teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water
* Although water for bathing does not generally need to be boiled, supervision of children in bathtubs or pools is necessary so that water is not ingested. Persons with cuts or severe rashes may want to consult their physicians.
The city apologizes to any inconvenience cause to residents. Questions about the order can be directed to the public works department at 243-2300.
