Residents of 211 Greensferry Road in Jackson were awakened by flickering lights caused by a fire in the attic early Thursday.

Jackson firefighters received a call around 4:15 a.m. and were able to extinguish the fire and return to the station in about three hours.

"All signs point to it being an electrical issue," said chief Jason Mouser, who added that attic wiring is believed to have sparked the flames.

Mouser said there was water damage throughout the two-story rental home. A dollar estimate for the damage was not available.

Two families who lived in the home escaped. One woman carrying a child fell and the child was taken to be examined for injury as a precaution.

According to the U. S. Fire Administration, electrical fires become more common in the winter months with increased use of lights and heating. Best defenses are to routinely check appliances, outlets and wiring, to have a working smoke alarm and to practice an escape plan.
