Jackson will hold its annual e-cycling event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Recycling Center, 508 Eastview Court.
The event allows unusable electronic items, appliances and other metal objects to be diverted from landfills, according to a news release from Jackson Public Works director Rodney Bollinger.
Examples of accepted items are lawn mowers (emptied of gas and oil), tools, air conditioners, laptops, TVs, computers and accessories, game systems and cartridges, stereo equipment and rechargeable and lead batteries.
Items not accepted include tires; AAA, A, C and D batteries, radioactive materials and other hazardous waste items.
Cape Girardeau County residents and businesses are invited to dispose of items, the release said. Solid-waste customers in Jackson should dispose of their recyclable electronic items at this event, because they are not picked up curbside during Clean Up--Fix Up Week.
No trash will be accepted Saturday, only recyclable materials.
Midwest Recycling Center will conduct all e-cycling activities Saturday using approved waste management practices, the release stated.
All computer hard drives will be shredded or erased using U.S. Department of Defense-approved software.
Thanks to a grant awarded to the vendor for the event, the normal $15 television disposal fee will be waived for all computer monitors and one TV per Jackson household, according to the release. Additional TVs will be accepted at $20 each for up to 27 inches and $40 for any TV larger than 27 inches, including wooden consoles of any screen size, for anyone bringing more than one TV per vehicle.
All other accepted recyclable material can be disposed of for free, and VIP Security Shredding will be available from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to offer free shredding services for Jackson residents.
