The city of Jackson was recognized by the American Public Power Association for excellence in reliability during Monday night’s board of aldermen meeting. Jackson utilities significantly outperformed the electric-industry national average for power reliability.

The APPA is a trade group based in Washington, D.C., that oversees more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities such as Jackson’s.

The city’s service data placed in the top quartile of system outage duration among the concerned cities’ utilities.

“This honor recognizes utilities that are statistically thriving when it comes to reliability,” said Michael Hyland, APPA senior vice president of engineering services.

Don Schuette, director of electric utilities in Jackson, said his department is proud to have received the recognition.

“We work hard to keep the lights on day in and day out,” he said. “It’s nice to see that hard work pay off with this kind of recognition.”
