JACKSON -- The Jackson High School Squawler newspaper walked away with the Blue Banner Award at the Southern Illinois School Press Association's Spring Conference recently at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. JACKSON -- The Jackson High School Squawler newspaper walked away with the Blue Banner Award at the Southern Illinois School Press Association's Spring Conference recently at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

The award recognizes excellence in high school newspaper writing, content, photographs, layout design and ads.

Representatives from the SIU School of Journalism and the Society of Professional Journalists judge the newspapers.

In individual content areas The Squawler took third place in the Best Front Page Layout category.

Ryan Corrigan took second place in the on-site newswriting contest and received honorable mention in Best Sports Column.

Eddie Upchurch received third place for Best Photograph With a Caption category and Lisa Thompson won third place in the Best Interview Story.

Receiving honorable mention in the Best Feature category were Kim Garms and Ryan Strack. Garms also received honorable mention in the Best Featurette category.

Chris Friedrich walked away with several awards in advertising including two honorable mentions and third place in the Best Original Advertisement category and first place in the Advertising Design on-site contest.

Jessica Winschel took second place in the Front Page Layout Design on-site contest and Keenan Kinder Received honorable mention in Editorial Writing.

In cutline writing Maria Evans received honorable mention.

Six hundred students from schools in Missouri Illinois and Kentucky participated.

Kim Garms and Shawn Smee served as Squawler co-editors for the 1992-93 school year. Debbie Otto is Squawler adviser.
