A Jackson tradition will continue on Tuesday when Homecomers gears up for its 97th year.
The American Legion-sponsored festival has a way of bringing the town together like no other Jackson event, said Homecomers chairman Bill Poe.
"People call me every month saying 'When is Homecomers going to be? My son wants to come home from Michigan and see his friends,'" said Poe.
While an exact count on how many people attend Homecomers isn't available, Poe said he's heard estimates of 5,000-10,000 people over the five-day event in uptown Jackson.
Homecomers features rides and attractions in a carnival-like atmosphere along with the popular entertainment stage, home of the multi-night talent contest.
The talent contest is open to people ages 6-21 who want to compete at singing, dancing and other talents. The contest takes place each night of the festival, starting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
A field of 75 to 100 contestants usually sign up, with the winner earning a berth in the Mid-South Fair talent contest in Memphis taking place in September.
Contestants can register through today by calling the Jackson Chamber of Commerce at 243-8131.
Following the talent show on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will be performances by local bands Country Touch and Coyote Creek at 9 p.m.
Saturday night's entertainment will be provided by the First General Baptist Church with their performance of "Hee-Haw" at 6:30 p.m. and the Homecomers Queen contest at 8 p.m.
