JACKSON -- City employees will be able to live outside the city limits as a result of an ordinance passed Monday night.
The Jackson Board of Aldermen passed a revised ordinance that amends the city residency requirements of full-time employees.
Previously, all city employees were required to live within the city limits. The new residency requirements place no limitation on the radius from Jackson that city employees may reside.
An earlier-proposed version of the ordinance that limited city employees to living within the Jackson R-2 School District was rejected Monday night.
Assistant city administrator Larry Koenig will now add the duties of city collector to his job description. An ordinance was passed to comply with city voters' abolishment of the city collector's position a year ago.
A motion authorizing the city administrator to prepare an informational brochure on a sewer-water bond issue was passed. The issue is expected to be on the August ballot.
City administrator Stephen Wilson said the brochures will be prepared locally and will be available to all citizens of Jackson. The bond issue, if passed, would provide for sanitary sewer and water projects in the city.
In other business, aldermen passed a motion authorizing an application for a Missouri 1997 Local Law Enforcement Block Grant. The grant would provide $10,000 to the Jackson Police Department to purchase bulletproof vests.
Mayor Paul Sander announced he has requested in a letter to Cape Girardeau Mayor Al Spradling III to share the cable access Channel 5 with the city of Jackson. He said no reply has been made by Spradling.
The mayor set Spring Cleanup for May 5 through May 9. Residents may place anything from lawn clippings to appliances on the curb by 8 a.m., during the special pickup. No return trips will be made for those who fail to have their refuse out on that day. Questions may be directed to the sanitation department at 243-5691 or the public works department at 243-2300.
