Citing the lack of a full council present Monday, the Jackson Board of Aldermen for the second consecutive meeting delayed voting on a special permit for a home-based gunsmithing business.
On Jan. 19 the aldermen heard comments from the public in a hearing about the business at 1430 Douglas Drive. During the public hearing the owners of the business, Perry and Pamela Evans, told the aldermen and others in attendance that they can meet conditions set by the aldermen for the permit, including no selling of ammunition and keeping all firearms in a safe when not received, examined, delivered or repaired.
But the alderman tabled the motion then after four of Evans' neighbors objected to the idea, claiming it violates neighborhood covenant and could negatively affect property values there.
The board will consider the issue again during its Feb. 16 meeting.
In other action, the board:
* Amended the 2009 budget, regarding funds exceeding their 2009 appropriations of different accounts including sales tax, inmate security, band fund and I-55 corridor special allocation.
* Approved Task Order Authorization No. 10-01 for $23,600 to Allen & Hoshall of Memphis, Tenn., for providing engineering services for the city's 4kV circuit conversion project.
* Accepted the $37,328 bid of Arkansas Electric Co-op of Little Rock, Ark., for the purchase of materials for the city's 4kV circuit conversion project.
* Amended an ordinance adding small commercial customers to the city's budget billing system.
* Passed an ordinance accepting the dedication of temporary construction easement deeds form June Allmon and Allen and Deborah Jennings for the North Hope Street Improvement Project.
