JACKSON -- The Jackson Board of Aldermen awarded a contract for the West Adams/Missouri Street renovation project Monday. The board also amended the city's major street plan to reserve a corridor for the future extension of East Main Street.

Two bids were received on the West Adams/Missouri Street project. The low bid of $234,650 was submitted by Fronabarger Concreters Inc. The bid of Penzel Construction Co. was $249,982. The engineer's estimate was $235,000.

The aldermen approved an ordinance authorizing the city to award the contract to Fronabarger. The work, which is expected to begin later this month or in early October, will include the removal of the old asphalt pavement. It will be replaced with concrete pavement in the 100, 200, and 300 blocks of West Adams and the 100 blocks of North and South Missouri. The work will also include removal of a large crown in the middle of the street, resulting from several layers of asphalt.

The project includes the asphalt resurfacing of the city parking lot behind the business district on the west and east side of South High Street. The project was scheduled to be completed last fall, but was delayed by bad weather.

The amendment to the city's major street plan calls for filing a map with the county recorder's office for the future extension of East Main Street to Interstate 55. A copy will be kept on file in the city engineer's office for public inspection.

The city is reserving a 9,500-foot-long corridor that will vary in width from 80-200 feet. Including the East Main Street corridor in the major street plan will restrict any future development or construction in that area.

In other business, the aldermen:

- gave final reading to an ordinance establishing a lateral sewer district in a subdivision being developed on Bainbridge Road by John Lichtenegger.

- Approved a request to change the width of a short, connecting street in the Fairway Estates Number Four Subdivision from 33 feet to 27 feet, with the provision that parking be allowed only on one side of the street.

- Approved a final payment of $7,000 to P&R Developers for the final phase of the East Jackson Boulevard sanitary sewer and lift station project.

- Set Oct. 4 as the date for a public hearing to rezone a tract of land near Kasten Lumber Co.

Residents who live near 906 Woodland were told that demolition of a dilapidated structure at that address is scheduled to begin this week, either by the owner or by city employees. The structure was condemned by the city after residents complained about the appearance of the property.

Board President Kevin Sawyer presided at the meeting in the absence of Mayor Paul Sander, who is out of town this week. City Administrator Carl Talley was absent because of an illness in the family.
