A majority of returned Jackson community survey results regarding a water improvements bond issue were in favor of upgrading the city's 2- and 4-inch water distribution pipes and not paying for softened water -- a luxury, not a necessity, many commented.

About 730 residents returned surveys regarding water distribution upgrades, and about 450 of those surveys returned selected Option A, in favor of the cheaper option for the water improvements bond issue, according to information presented by Jackson Mayor Barbara Lohr during the Jackson Board of Aldermen study session Monday evening.

The 2- and 4-inch pipes that can be found in older parts of the city are too small for appropriate water flow, creating a problem for firefighters.

Though the base rate for sewers increased last year, the sewer flow rate, or the amount of water used, will not increase as a result of the bond issue, Lohr said.

Other action

* The board passed an ordinance relative to a drinking water lead ban. The Missouri Department of Natural Resources earlier this year conducted a lead compliance inspection. The city of Jackson is required to pass an ordinance banning lead -- an issue already addressed in the city's building and plumbing codes, as a result.
